Morisset Park Day Trip

The perfect place to go if you’re looking to see kangaroos is Morisset Park! Officially, the park was built next to a psychiatric ward so that the kangaroos could help the patients, but now, it’s more of a place where you can go to see kangaroos in the ‘wild’! A Morisset Park Day trip is the perfect way to see kangaroos while you’re in Sydney and you don’t have too far to go.

Here’s how to get to Morisset Park:

Take the train from Sydney to Morisset Park. A train leaves from Central Station and takes about 3 hours. Be sure to plan your trip so you have plenty of time to get back (check google maps to find out when you can leave the park and catch a train back to Sydney). I had always heard that it was difficult to get to the Park once you got off the train at Morisset Station, but when I went they had shuttle vans that took you for $3 each trip.

Mama and her joey

When I went I had planned on feeding the kangaroos, but recently people have been hurt by the roos fighting over food, so just leave food at home to make sure nothing dampens your experience. One interesting fact about kangaroos is that they can’t go backwards. So this is why the kangaroo and emu are the national animals and Sydney’s national anthem is Advance Australia Fair.

Kangaroos galore

There are kangaroos everywhere at Morisset Park!

There are kangaroos everywhere! Some will let you pet them and others will even bounce right up to you! Most of the kangaroos are just taking it easy and lying around. It was surreal watching all the kangaroos move around and there were so many joeys (baby kangaroos)!

Taking a nice afternoon nap

There isn’t much else to do in the area, but walking around and watching the kangaroos sounds like a great day trip to me! You might even find a kangaroo that will let you hug them, like this one!

Even though Morisset Park will take up an entire day of your trip in Sydney, I highly recommend going! You cannot get an experience like this anywhere else in Sydney! Seeing kangaroos in the zoo just isn’t the same as this experience.
